AVIA 1700 Aviation Safety Management

Aims

  • To develop an appreciation of the principles of aviation safety.
  • To develop an understanding of the safe performance of flight.
  • To develop skills required for managing safety in an aviation operation.
Philosophy

This course is designed to present students with an understanding of the fundamentals of aviation safety and the complex factors that affect it. Students will examine accident statistics and incident reports to develop an appreciation of the factors that contribute to aircraft accidents. The lectures will consider the historical lessons and current challenges to the safe performance of flight, along with the many accident prevention strategies that are available.

Location

This course runs for seven weeks from Week 1 to Week 7 in Session 2 2007.

Lectures are held in: Mathews Lecture Theatre C at 1200 - 1600 on Tuesday.

Assessment

1. An essay to be handed in by the beginning of the week 5 lecture. (50%)
2. A written examination will be held at the end of week 7. (50%)

Note : Application for an extension of time should be made in writing prior to the due date. Late assignments, without a reason deemed satisfactory by the lecturer, will be penalised by a loss of 10% of total possible marks per day. Assignments will attract no marks if they are submitted after other assignments have been marked and returned, or two weeks after the due date (whichever is the earlier). Students are referred to the Department of Aviation's Student Survival Guide and the University's Student Handbook for full details on academic regulations.

In case of absence from the examination, a request for special consideration may be made only in accordance with the University's standard guidelines.
